    Default Low Carb Diet Information

    I finally decided to put what I've learned recently about diet up here - because if I can help anyone with what I've learned in the past 6 months, I'd like to. At least maybe it will get you thinking in a new direction.

    Those of you who have been around a while know that I've tried all sorts of diets and exercise. I had terrible self-esteem. I blamed myself for being a compulsive eater, for being unable to stick to diets, for having no willpower to push myself through to success, for not being motivated to exercise enough...you name it, it was probably part of the terrible things I thought and said about myself.

    I felt deeply that something was wrong. Normal people don't spend their time counting every calorie, planning every mouthful of food, and obsessing about where and when their next meal is coming. So I started to do research, and more research.

    Before I start giving you things to read and places to start looking, I want you to understand two things: first, no diet is right for every person. We are genetically different. The same cup of pasta ingested by two people can have two totally different outcomes on blood sugar. What I'm telling you is MY experience - and I'm telling you this because in my experience precious few people will. What you hear from the mainstream press and the government and from most health care workers is completely in opposition to this.

    The second thing I want you to understand is that you must do your own research. You must learn your body and know your body in order to know what you need to eat to be healthy. All I'm giving you is a place to start. If you're where I was - mired in frustration with weight loss - this could be a solution for you.

    My research started with the knowledge that the only diet that has ever been really successful for me was a diet that started with an induction phase that eliminated almost all carbohydrates, and then gradually re-introduced them over the course of weeks. Eventually, however, it re-introduced nearly everything, and ultimately failed. But I knew from (medically supervised) experience, that cutting carbs would work for me. That was part of the inspiration to give the rest of this theory a shot.

    I was hungry all the time, compelled to eat things even when I wasn't hungry, overweight by some 90-plus pounds, carrying most of my fat in my belly/around my middle, suffering fatigue and feeling muzzy headed and sluggish, and experiencing joint pain that was disproportional to the doctor's ability to diagnose something actually wrong. I was drawn to eating sugar and carbs (my favorite was cinnamon toast) and prone to snack or even binge on those specific foods. "Whole grain" didn't matter. I will happily overeat foods that are "good for me" as long as they have flour or sugar in them. I gave up wheat for a while, and found myself looking for rice and things made with alternative flours and sugars. Weight Watchers (the all things in moderation approach) left me hungry, miserable and prone to binges. Something was not right. Weight Watchers works for thousands, why was I so totally miserable on it?

    I went on my first diet when I was about 13. I'd broken my leg and spent 9 weeks in a full leg cast, and up to 9 more rehabbing, just about the time puberty hit. The doctor told my mom to swap us all to low-fat or skim dairy products, and put me on the traditional "low-fat" diet that is still recommended by most of the medical world. I re-learned how to eat at that point, and my weight went progressively upward over the next 30 years.

    I wasn't uneducated. I wasn't eating fast food and junk every day. I was trying to eat the way I was "supposed" to eat. I was eating oatmeal for breakfast, low fat yogurt, cutting out cheese, choosing skinless chicken breasts and low fat meats and measuring my portions. I've been trying since I was 13. And all that trying made happen for me was that I felt miserable, out of control and hungry all the time.

    There's this theory out there that people eat what they shouldn't because they don't know any better. I think that's simplistic and in many, many cases - just plain wrong. Research studies show that many participants in triathlons and marathons these days are overweight. People that exercise and take their health seriously still weigh more than they should and often struggle against high cholesterol and pre-diabetes.

    I did a lot of reading, and I'm not going to replay it all for you here, but I will tell you that the more I read, and the more I learn, the angrier I get about the whole situation. I lost two uncles to heart attacks last year. One had known for some time that he had issues. The other controlled his diet strictly using all the standard low-fat methods, and maintained a normal weight. I know that I have a genetic propensity for some of the same issues, and this is another big motivator. One of my uncles was barely 20 years older than I am.

    I have been low-carbing for 5 weeks now. I am still struck by the dissonance between what I "knew" all my life and the way I am eating now. I've lost 26 pounds in 5 weeks, and I feel good. I'm dropping weight without counting a single calorie. I have a lot more energy and mental clarity. My joints are improving, and I am able to exert myself more in TKD. My asthma is beginning to improve.
